Canisteo, N.Y. — Most people who have watched any NFLgames this month have noticed the pink armbands, towels and cleats some players have elected to wear in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. When 19-year-old race car driver Bryce Davis saw this, he took it as inspiration.
“The idea just came to mind that it would be neat to change the color scheme of the car for something like that,” said Bryce Davis while preparing for his final dirt-track race of the season Thursday evening.
Davis’ car — which is normally white, neon green and black — will sport pink ribbons for Breast Cancer Awareness Month during Saturday’s BRPCanAm 360 Late Model Series race at Black Rock Speedway in Dundee.
The 2009 Canisteo-Greenwood Central School graduate is going one step above just wrapping the car with pink ribbons. He has set a goal to raise $2,500 for the local breast cancer patient’s fund at St. James Mercy Hospital.
To raise the money, Davis’ race car will be at the Canisteo American Legion from noon-9 p.m. today. Anyone making a donation will be able to sign the car to be raced in the final BRPCanAm 360 Late Model Series event of the season Saturday.
“Whatever people can donate,” said Bryce’s mother Jody Davis. “Everything helps. If Bryce wins he will be splitting the winnings with the fund.”
Bryce Davis will be available to speak to people and sign autographs from 5:45-9 p.m. today at the Legion. Donations can also be made at the race Saturday. Pink Davis Racing t-shirts will be available at the Legion for $10.
Although Davis doesn’t have anyone in his family who has fought breast cancer, a close high school friend’s aunt was diagnosed with the disease.
“Cancer in general affects a lot of families,” said Bryce Davis. “It hits home to a lot of people. You can see what (the diagnosis) does to a family when they get that kind of news.”
Davis isn’t the only driver getting involved in raising money for breast cancer. Some drivers will be making their way up into the stands Saturday to pass a helmet for donations around. That money will also be donated to the patient fund.
